How To Find The Bra Right For You

April 8, 2010

Plus Size Bra ShoppingHaving the right bra makes a huge difference. You feel better when you wear a bra that supports your body properly.  The cup, side and back panels all need to fit right.  Your entire breast needs to fit in the cup and there cannot be “extra” sticking out the sides or over the top like a muffin.

You should not be able to fit two fingers under the front of the bra. If you can, the bra is too big.

The bra should fit, snug around your body and fasten on the most outer group of hooks.  As you wear the bra it will loosen up and then you can use the inner fasteners to maintain a snug fit around your body.

The next thing is style.  I was always able to find lots of bras that fit but they looked matronly, you know something your grandmother would wear.  I felt like I was being punished for having large breasts.

But –I found some designers that I really love.  If you are a full figure, you may want to look at Freya, Fantasie, Felina, Chantelle or Elomi for style and fit.

I know some women don’t like underwire but it really is the best way to go for support.  There may be some bras that give good support without an underwire out there but I have not seen them.  What I do see is lots of women with breasts sitting way too low, hanging out the sides and muffin-tops.

It pays to get a professional fitting and in my opinion, Nordstrom does an incredible job of fitting their customers.  When you find a bra that fits you should stick with it. Styles will change but the construction (support) will remain the same and that is what you need.

My favorite place to buy bras is Nordstrom and every September my friend and I go bra shopping. Over the years this has become an annual ritual that I look forward to every fall.

Before my Nordstrom routine started, I did not realize that I was not in the right bra.  I did not look the way I wanted to but I really didn’t know I had other choices. I wanted to have a better presentation.

But because my breasts are big I just thought I was stuck with whatever bra I could find to fit my size– even if the look was not right.  I had no idea what the proper fit, for me, was until I went to Nordstrom and was professionally fitted.

It’s not about finding the right bra but choosing the bra that is right for you.

Happy lingerie shopping!!!
